Garin's Death Ray ( The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin ) by Alexei Tolstoy is a Soviet science fiction novel that critiques capitalist greed and the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition. Engineer Garin, a brilliant but ruthless scientist, invents a powerful heat ray capable of incinerating anything in its path. Seeking world domination, he allies with an American millionaire, Rolling, and exploits a gold deposit in the Pacific to amass wealth and power. Garin’s hyperboloid becomes a tool of capitalist oppression, as he uses it to establish a dictatorship of wealth, manipulating global markets and crushing resistance. However, his relentless pursuit of power and disregard for humanity ultimately lead to betrayal and opposition from revolutionary forces, including the Soviet agent Shelga, who embodies the novel’s communist ideals of justice and collective struggle. As Garin’s empire collapses under rebellion, his technological supremacy proves insufficient against the power of the masses. His capitalist greed and individualist ambitions isolate him, and he is ultimately left stranded on a volcanic island, symbolizing the failure of imperialist and bourgeois aspirations. The novel aligns with Soviet ideology by portraying Garin’s downfall as the inevitable consequence of his capitalist worldview, while contrasting it with the triumph of socialist values through Shelga’s moral resilience.
