E. W. (Edgar Watson) Howe (1853–1937) was an American novelist, editor, and essayist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his realistic novel *The Story of a Country Town* and for his aphorisms, which earned him the nickname "the Sage of Potato Hill."
